Romans 1:18-32

Paul's description of humanity's rebellion is not primarily about breaking rules, it is about exchanging worship. We all worship something or someone. Humanity was created to know, love, and glorify the Creator, yet we continually exchange his glory for lesser things. Idolatry, including sexual idolatry, always deforms those who practice it because we become like whatever we worship. The result is not simply personal guilt but the unraveling of every dimension of human life including our thinking, relationships, desires, and societies. God's wrath is therefore not merely future judgment but his present act of giving people over to the destructive consequences of worshiping created things rather than the Creator. Yet this sobering and difficult passage is not intended to leave us in despair. It prepares us to recognize our desperate need for grace. Before we can appreciate the greatness of the gospel, we must understand the depth of our lostness. The good news begins by telling the truth about the human condition, exposing every false savior so that our hearts might return to the One in whom true life is found.
