Leading A Covenant Community

Exodus 18:7-27
Before Israel reaches Sinai, Jethro visits Moses and reminds him that leadership cannot be done alone. Moses is overwhelmed, attempting to judge every dispute among the people. Jethro’s counsel establishes a structure of wise, God-fearing leaders who can share the burden and shepherd the community. This part of the story emphasizes biblical leadership—rooted in character, wisdom, mutuality, and the fear of the Lord. God builds His people into a functioning covenant community where responsibilities are shared and leaders serve humbly. Exodus 18 shows that God not only saves individuals but forms a covenant people equipped to serve one another. Healthy covenantal ministry involves shared responsibility, godly leadership, and rejoicing in the Lord’s redemptive work together.
