PLAY - WORSHIP - LISTEN - WONDER - RESPOND
Each Sunday, children at City Line are invited into a joyful expression of Christian worship in one of four worshipping communities (for children 9 and older, please see our youth program page):
- • Nursery
- • 2-3 year olds
- • 4-5 year olds
- • 6-8 year olds
The spiritual formation of each child and of the worshipping community is fostered through the involvement of adult volunteers who invite the children to experience the wonder and mystery of God. Drawing on the approach of Young Children and Worship and Godly Play (both derived from Montessori principles), City Line’s Children’s Ministry utilizes multi-sensory materials and a unique storytelling format.
Each child is welcomed into participation in fun, spontaneous activities. Next, the children are transitioned into a circle and prepared to hear the story of the people of God through some form of prayer. The storyteller captivates the children through focus on the materials, then sparks their curiosity through “I wonder” questions. Each child is then invited to respond to the story using art materials.
Our approach intends to develop playful, curious and deeply spiritual children who are involved in liturgy mirroring the adult worship service. While the cognitive is by no means ignored, the focus of our Sunday service is on practicing the worship of God and savoring the stories of God (a lifelong endeavor!). Due to this focus, our children’s worshipping communities can sustain radical differences in developmental stage as well as culture, age and cognitive abilities, similar to any adult congregation.
DROP-OFF AND PICK UP
On Sundays at 9:00 am, adults and children worship together during the first part of the service – singing songs, praying, and learning the rhythms of confession and forgiveness. Before the sermon (about 20 minutes into the service), children and their parents/guardians are prayed for, and then dismissed to their age-appropriate classes (there will be signs to guide you). Parents/guardians are asked to drop-off and pick-up their children from their classroom. Children’s worship ends at the same time as the main service.
